Orioles pitching continues to struggle in day games

This season for some reason, out of all the split stats (ex: Home, Road, Night, Day, etc.), the Baltimore Orioles pitching staff cannot seem to perform well whenever they play day games. Day games are when the O’s pitchers have their lowest winning percentage (.560*, *before the game today), highest earned run average (4.62*), and highest opponent on-base percentage (.337*). The Angels helped expose those stats today as they go on to defeat the O’s by a score of 9-5.

O’s starter Jason Hammel, who has been unlucky pitching at home this season with a 1-3 record and a 7.33 earned run average, earned a no decision today. He pitched six plus innings giving up seven hits, four runs, two walk and striking out just one Angel batter. Part of the reason that Hammel had four earned runs instead of two is because of Pedro Strop who came in relief for him and stunk up the place lasting only one-third of an inning giving up four runs and earning the loss for the O’s. The Angels batted around the lineup in the seventh inning scoring six runs, Hammel still hasn’t won a game since May 27th in Washington and hasn’t had an earned run average under 4.00 since late April.

Angels starter Jerome Williams, a converted reliever, earned the win in this game to improve to 5-2 this season help Los Angeles avoid the sweep. This must have been payback for the May 5th beating he took from the O’s in his first start of the season. He pitched six innings giving up nine hits, four runs, one walk and struck out four batters. This was Williams’ first win since May 26th this season when the Angels were in Kansas City.

Baltimore bats despite this loss were not quiet, third baseman Manny Machado went 2 for 5 and extended his hitting streak to ten games. Adam Jones and Chris Davis added a solo home run and two RBI’s each, and also “Crush” hit his 100th career double today. One bat that has definitely been quiet is backup catcher Taylor Teagarden who has still not gotten a single hit this season. He caught in the game today and went 0 for 3 and is hitless in 20 at-bats this season. Why can’t the O’s find a decent hitting backup catcher?

This loss puts the O’s at 14-12 overall in day games this season. The O’s will now open up a four game series at Camden Yards with the feisty Boston Red Sox. Probables for the first game tomorrow 7:05 pm/ET will be Gausman (BAL 0-3) vs. Doubront (BOS 4-3).
